Na twee PlayStation 2 delen maakte Yakuza de overstap naar de PlayStation 3 met Yakuza Kenzan. De game speelt zich af tijdens het Edo era in het jaar 1605, dit is de tijd van de samurai. De vechtstijlen zijn hiervoor ook aangepast. Je kunt vechten met je vuisten, met één zwaard, twee zwaarden of een groot zwaard.
Terwijl Yakuza 3 en Yakuza 4 die later verschenen, ondertussen wel in Europa beschikbaar zijn; kunnen we Yakuza Kenzan hier nog altijd niet kopen. Volgens Sega US community representative RubyEclipse (die SEGA vertegenwoordigt op verschillende fora) bestaat de kans echter dat Kenzan nog altijd naar Europa en Amerika komt. Als Yakuza 4 nog beter doet dan Yakuza 3, dan bestaat de kans dat SEGA openstaat voor een Westerse release van het spel.
But if we want to encourage higher-ups at SEGA to explore bolstering the franchise further, we have to first show some major growth with the series as it stands. Yakuza 3 did well, in large part thanks to the fans, and now it's really, really important that Yakuza 4 does even better. The more units it ships, the more likely SEGA as a company will be to spend / risk more on it in the future. It's all basic business stuff, but still worth noting.
